To be successful in this profession the undertaker performing these duties must have certain essential and unique skills and qualities.
As his services may be required at any time of the day, an undertaker must be ready to work at odd hours too. This is primarily an outdoors job, which will need him to be away from office for long hours.
To become an undertaker, a person must be able to interact well and be open to the viewpoints of others. With customers hailing from so many religions, traditions and cultures, he must be able to interact with and manage each one of them efficiently. He must be compassionate and should empathize with others. But he will have to offer support to the bereaved family and should stay strong and mentally detached so that he can perform his functions well.
Although the job is by nature serious and distressful, the undertakers should impart an aura of serenity to the funeral service instead of more sorrow or unhappiness through their demeanour.
Knowledge of various religious beliefs, practices and sentiments, and profound respect for these greatly helps undertakers find success in their profession. As various people follow different funeral customs and methods, it is better to have knowledge of these.
An undertaker should have good organisational and management skills. He must also possess leadership abilities and should be able to interact with a large number of people – from the clergy members to the flower seller.
Legal procedures and other official formalities to be followed in the event of a death must be familiar to the undertaker who will have to receive required approvals etc for the funeral ceremonies and other related matters. He will need to be fully conscious of rules to be followed for the purpose of collecting death certificates or insurance payments.
Lastly, an undertaker must ensure that his driver\’s licence is regularly updated and that he can drive the funeral vehicle during the ceremony.
