The Things You Should Know About Hypnosis
Posted on Feb 04, 2010 under Health and Fitness | 1 CommentHypnosis and its derivative, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of several misconceptions created by layman\’s imagination. Some believe them to be some type of spell while others hesitate to even recognize their existence. Provided below are some general beliefs prevalent about hypnosis, and the real truth behind them.
Hypnosis has no link with any sort of dark arts. Psychology and the other sciences have a critical role to play in the hypnotic method, and it is very easy to acquire and practice. The authenticity of hypnosis is suspected even by individuals who have seen it working on subjects. They hold that those who can be hypnotized are mentally not strong enough. But that is not true at all. Even people with strong will power can fall under the spell of a specialist hypnosis practitioner.
Another false belief about hypnosis that people have invented arbitrarily is that it is an altered state of consciousness. An individual under hypnosis does not get shut off from the external world, but stays completely aware of the happenings around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes completely and is hence able to focus fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.
Another misconception, which has been circulated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can work on merely 5% of the human population. The scientists are to some extent true in their own way, because they tried hypnotising the group by the same hypnosis technique without considering individual differences in nature and disposition. Hypnosis can\’t be straight jacketed like that and works only if there are different methodologies for different personality styles.
Meditation and hypnosis are often confused with each other. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a mental state and usually has nothing to do with communication. Similarly, a state of trance is also sometimes confused with hypnosis, which is not true. Trance is again a mental state sans any communication, on the other hand communication forms the very basis of the hypnosis technique.
Another misconception is that physical and behavioural alterations in an individual are not attainable through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is unnatural to the body. But it can bring about a development in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.
If an individual falls for all the wrong notions that exist regarding hypnotherapy and doesn\’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself burn the bridge to a happier and healthier life.
